Foreword

Dear EC2E2N NewsLetter Readers,

Romanian Chemical Society (Societatea Romana de Chimie) - www.schr.org.ro - was found in 1919 by an enthusiastic group of chemist from Bucharest University.

The society has a fruitful activity in the period 1919-1945, and also an international recognition reflected in the organization of the VI IUPAC Congress in 1925. Among the participants at this event we mention the Nobel prize laureates Victor Grignard and Paul Sabatier.

During 1945-1989 the Society entered in hibernation period, such type of organizations not being agreed by the communist regime. After 1989, another group of enthusiast chemists reorganized the society. Now the Romanian Chemical Society counts a number of:

  • 20 territorial organizations founded around universities, research centres or chemical industry;

  • 7 sections organized on topics;

  • 3000 members including students and honorary members.

Romanian Chemical Society takes charge of 3 publications:

Among the activities organized by RSCh one can mentioned:

  • Organization of national and international conferences, as well as financial support for participation to such events;

  • Organization and support for national and international competitions for young people for attracting them towards chemistry;

  • Organization of national debates concerning education and the development of chemistry in our country;

  • Rewards for members with remarkable professional activity (research, education, industrial implementation, etc.)

As a representative example of international meetings we would like to mention that EucheMS was born in Bucharest at the conference organized in 2004.

The Newsletter tries to present one of the most important activities organized by the society for the Year of Chemistry. It shows also that our society is since long time integrated in the European Area of Research by the traditional international relationships.

It is interesting to mention that with the opportunity of the International Year of Chemistry, the National bank of Romania had launched a special coin:

We do hope that by reading it you will know more about chemists from Romania and maybe, you will try to make new co-operations with society members.

Enjoy your reading.
