Chemistry - our life, our future

Dear NewsLetter Readers,

We always follow a neutral position regarding external events, but due to the recent situation facing the Polish tragedy we will make an exception today. We would like to express our most sincere condolences to our Polish colleagues and friends, an important and very active community in our Chemical Education network; and most generally to the Polonia worldwide.

No Guest editor for this News edition positioned just few days before our plenary meeting to be held next week in Montpellier, France, where Jacqueline Raymond and Gérard Bauduin our local organizers and friends, will welcome us in this beautiful area. To report the achievements reached and drafted projects, a dedicated issue is scheduled in June/July. Last minute information about the work package "Lecturing Qualifications".

Even if the number of contributions of this issue, is lower than in the previous ones, you will find several valuable articles and news under the different items. Dealing with Life Long Learning, two projects recently started under the leadership of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (Greece), and one article published by Leo Gros one of our former Guest Editor.

Also the great pleasure to publish a translated version of an original French article, focusing on Ochres; of interest for both analytical and conservation sciences points of view. Thank you to V.Hornebecq and F.Boulc'h, and thank you to L'Actualité Chimique.

Various announcements, a new symposium at the 3rd ECC (Nurmberg DE), the ICIQ Summer School and the Australian International Education Conference.

Enjoy your reading.

EC2E2N in connexion with Life Long Learning Programme Projects

Evangelia Varella, Thessaloniki GR, March 9, 2010: ECTNA, as well as several members of EC2E2N, are participating as a partner in two recently launched Lifelong Learning Programme projects, coordinated by the Aristotle Univerity of Thessaloniki, Greece. Summaries of the projects read as follows:

Valorisation of EChemTest Testing Centres

The proposal is addressing overall dissemination and exploitation of the possibilities offered by EChemTest, a computer-based multilingual test of European standard, developed by the European Chemistry Thematic Network, and permitting evaluation of knowledge and skills in chemistry at levels corresponding to the end of compulsory education; the beginning of university studies; the completion of the core chemistry syllabus in analytical, biological, inorganic, organic and physical chemistry; and the closing stages of master’s curricula in synthetic and computational chemistry, and chemistry applied in conservation science. In addition to on-line self-assessment opportunities, EChemTest sessions are offered under controlled conditions in eight fully equipped Testing Centres, located in Austria, Spain, Finland, France, Greece, Italy, Poland, and the United Kingdom; disposing of an educational supervisor and a trained ICT administrator; awarding relevant certificates; and acting as partners of the present project. Target groups encompass secondary, vocational and tertiary education students, as well as adult learners.

The project is confronting the lack of valorisation of EChemTest. In detail it is aimed at: accrediting EChemTest, and upgrading it into a widely accepted qualification for all those studying chemical subjects or having chemistry-related employments; giving Testing Centres the potential of expanding their influence by creating further examination units with a full European coverage; turning EChemTest into a prerequisite for student mobility; incorporating EChemTest in education curricula as part of the workload; and permitting vocational trainees and adult learners to accredit chemical knowledge and skills in their work environment by being successfully examined in various modules and at various levels. Thus, the project will have a wide-ranging impact over chemistry-related studies, both formal and informal, in Europe and outside its boarders.

Joint Interface Third-Cycle Degrees in Chemistry

The closer alignment of the European Higher Education Area with the European Research Area is asking for innovative doctoral programmes at the interface of traditional disciplines; while transparent structures enhancing mobility are the most efficient way for opening the European job market to all young researchers. In this frame, the project is addressing curricular reform at third-cycle level for Ph.D. candidates wishing to study and perform research work at the interface of chemistry and other scientific disciplines. Launched with a survey of the current situation and a needs analysis, the project is aimed at creating descriptors and designing guidelines for the establishment of trans-national interdisciplinary doctorate schools; and at implementing a number of relevant joint degrees in accordance with the requirements of the job market. Consistent harmonized virtual campus infrastructures are assisting the teacher and learner exchange scheme; a permanent support and information point is dealing with current issues; and a pool of experts is guaranteeing full coverage of interface subjects. Research areas envisaged include among other conservation science, didactics of chemistry, computational chemistry, biological chemistry, and technical chemistry.

The “Chemistry Set” at the University of Applied Sciences Fresenius

Leo Gros, Idstein DE, March 8, 2010:

For those who are interested in chemistry and who also insist on the established characteristics of a bachelor course of studies at a university of applied science, the University of Applied Science Fresenius offers an eight-semester Bachelor course of studies. At present it is the only university in Germany which does so. This course also integrates an obligatory period abroad and a work placement, each lasting for one semester. A twosemester Master course of studies “Bio- and Pharmaceutical Analysis” is based on this Bachelor course. Anybody who is interested in management and marketing, besides chemistry, can choose an alternative Bachelor-course of studies “Chemistry with Economics”. Up to the 4th semester the students follow the same courses and thereafter decide which course to follow (...)

A Flexible Life Long Learning Toolbox for Chemists - Vocational and University Education with Mobility Elements.

Leo Gros, Idstein DE, March 8, 2010:

Abstract: The present paper gives an overview on good practice examples in different European countries taking into account the Bologna process. The sector of chemistry is chosen as the field described because of its particularly advanced and flexible educational structure. The advantages, disadvantages and the benefits are discussed. Good practice in this sector may well serve as a model for other sectors.
Key words: chemistry, career paths, life long learning, mobility, placements

The Ochres from Provence: from extraction to painting

Virgine Hornebecq, Marseille FR, April 7, 2010:

Abstract: Ochres from Provence display a wide range of colours spreading from yellow to violet. These colours are connected to the presence of iron based inorganic pigments. The scope of this work is a scientific project intended for first year students in science. Its major aim is to make them acquainted with scientific practice and its requirements. Taking as a starting material the ochres from Provence, we first focussed our attention on the relationship between crystallographic structure/chemical bonding and the colour of iron based inorganic pigments (yellow and red) using both experimental and bibliographic data. In this way, observed change of colour from yellow to red is due to the transformation of goethite FeOOH into hematite Fe2O3 evidenced using X-ray diffraction. The difference of colour between these two pigments was explained considering the chemical bonding metal/ligand in the two compounds and this difference was evidenced using visible spectroscopy. Then, we were interested in the preparation of paints starting from these iron based inorganic pigments (yellow, red, black –Fe3O4-). Three techniques were used: the water-painting, the oil-painting and the egg-painting techniques. (...)
