Globalized markets and the proper
implementation of EU legislation are dependent on reliable measurements in
laboratories worldwide. The importance of appropriate education in this area was
acknowledged in 2005 and led to an initiative of Prof. Philip Taylor of the
Joint Research Centre of the European Commission, Institute for Reference
Materials and Measurements, in Geel/Belgium. Nine universities from six EU
countries formed a consortium to offer a Joint Degree Programme called
Measurement Science in Chemistry and the JRC-IRMM acts as a mentor organisation
within it. This open consortium was now awarded the Euromaster® label for their
programme by ECTNA. Details are found on
www.eurolabels.eu. This Euromaster® programme
will better prepare students for the novel requirements prevailing on today’s
job market, thus leading to more harmonised measurements across the EU.
Prof. Zupan (former Slovenian Minister for Higher Education Science and Technology, right) symbolically handed over - in the name of ECTNA - the Euromaster® label in a small ceremony in Ljubljana to Prof. Dr. Ivo Leito of Tartu University (left) as coordinator of the international consortium of the Euromaster® programme “Measurement Science in Chemistry”. The ceremony was attended by the European Commissioner Dr. Janez Potočnik (2nd from left) and the current Slovenian Minister for Higher Education Science and Technology Mrs. Mojca Kuncler-Dolinar (2nd from right). Members of the international consortium are the University of Tartu, Estonia (coordinating institution); Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznań, Poland; Maria Curie-Skłodowska University, Lublin, Poland; University of Warsaw, Poland; Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1, Lyon, France; South-West University “Neofit Rilski”, Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria; Maribor University, Maribor, Slovenia; University of Lisbon, Lisbon, Portugal; University of Bucharest, Bucharest, Romania.
