With a slight
delay, please find the June/July NewsLetter issue. At the moment, my
feelings are shared between 2 good news:
I'm
delighted to learn that my friend leaving close to Mumbay IN, is
safe and was not in Mumbay when the recent attacks occurs;
I'm
pleased to congratulate our Italian friends for the C60-fullerene
chemistry application, also called, "foottballene" ...
congratulations to the winning team.
Summer time is
here, with holidays for most of us. In this issue you will find
different group reports, but I'd like to draw your attention to a new
contribution, number 7, of the
working group "Links with
School" <here>,
and the report on the plenary meeting held in Vienna last April <here>
and the final report on the Eurobachelor®
project period <here>. Also,
one report on Chem04 conference held in Egypt,
and several new conference
announcements are incorporated. We will be back next October with a new
editorial summary.
The ECTN plenary meeting was held in Vienna, AT on 18
- 22 April, 2006. The meeting was a great success with a record
breaking 162 participants. All the ECTN working groups were active
at the meeting. In addition, the meeting included sessions for
TASSEP (TransAtlantic Science Student Exchange Programme), for the
European Chemistry Exchange network (ECEN) and of course the General
Assembly of the ECTN Association. The activity reports of the
various working groups will be provided by the group leaders.
This year there were more plenary lectures than we
have had in previous years. There was a wide range of topics as
indicated by the titles given below, as well as a range of speakers
– from an accreditation agency, from a small enterprise, established
and younger university chemistry staff, and a chemistry student (Annemiek).
These excellent lectures provided much food for thought and played a
significant part in the success of the meeting. The tiles of the
lectures are given below – copies of the presentations are available
on the meeting website
http://ectn2006.tuwien.ac.at, together with the presentations
made at some of the working group sessions.

An evaluation questionnaire was sent to all
participants by e-mail. If you have not yet replied, please do so
within the next two weeks. This evaluation is important. It provides
feedback for the European Commission when we submit the final report
and it provides the Management Committee with information that can
lead to further improvements and ideas for our next meeting. If you
want a copy of the questionnaire please send a request to
Marie-Jeanne Feucht at cpe.fr.
The plenary meeting was evaluated by Michael Gagan,
UK. A copy of his report is available
here (Acrobat PDF / 190 Kb).
The meeting was superbly organised by Johannes
Fröhlich and all his helpers, and I thank them all on behalf of the
ECTN for all the work they did to ensure the success of the meeting.
The reply from the European Commission concerning our
new ECTN project, ECTN4: Chemistry in the Higher Education Area,
should be received at the end of July. I will inform all ECTN
contacts immediately I receive this reply.
In anticipation of a positive response, and in order
to be able to begin the new project on time, group leaders for the
new working groups to be established under the new project were
appointed at the Wien meeting.
The new working group on employability in which all actors in
higher education in chemistry (academics, students, recent
graduates, employers, chemical industry workers) will be
represented will be led by Pavel Drasar, CZ.
The new group on innovation in teaching will be led jointly by
Ingo Eilks, DE and Bill Byers, UK.
There was a great deal of interest amongst the
members to participate in these working groups. Any other member
interested should contact the group leader or Tony Smith.
I wish all of you a relaxing summer with time to
recharge your batteries for a busy and successful new academic year.
The next ECTN Management
Committee meeting will take place
in Mostoles (Madrid),
ES on 14-15 September, 2006. Any members wishing to suggest items
for discussion at this meeting are invited to contact .
The Next Annual
Conference of the ECTN will be held at San Sabastian ES, on April
11-15, 2007. The dedicated website pages will come soon, the organizer is .
The next
meeting of the Administrative Council will take place in Mostoles
(Madrid),
ES on 14-15 September, 2006. Any
Association members who have items they wish to be discussed at this
meeting should contact or any member of the
Administrative Council.

The „Chemistry Eurobachelor®“
(www.eurobachelor.eu:
note new domain!!), has already been awarded to twelve leading
European chemistry departments for a total of seventeen degree
programmes. Nine further applications, involving thirteen
programmes, were processed between April and June this year (an
immense task) and were recommended for award at the final
meeting of the Label Committee under the pilot project, held
just in time in Madrid (where we had our very first meeting) on
June 30th. Now the Administrative Council must give
its place to these recommendations. In all, applications from
eleven Bologna countries were received. Thus the Eurobachelor®
pilot project, supported by the EU Commission and
ending on June 30th, has been highly successful.
From autumn 2006 the „Euromaster Label“
will be offered, also with financial support from Brussels. The
contract officially started on November 1st 2005, but
in fact only arrived in May!
Following the approval by the General
Assembly of the Association in Vienna in April of the Euromaster
concept as presented and discussed, the Eurolabel Committee has
formulated Guidelines for Applicants and polished the Euromaster
paper a little. Again the Administrative Council will take the
necessary decisions, in Mostoles (near Madrid) in mid-September.
Apart from ASIIN, Düsseldorf, which will
cover the German “market”, the Royal Society of Chemistry has
agreed to be a partner of ECTNA in awarding the labels (in both
the UK and Ireland), starting with the Eurobachelor Label. Other
countries are discussing setting up their own accrediting
organisation so as to be able to work with ECTNA. Watch this
space for details!!
In Madrid four members of the original Label
Committee stepped down, and were given certificates conferring
on them the status of “Honorary Eurobachelors”. The other four
will stay, to continue to develop the Euromaster, together with
the four new members. Wish us luck!
I want to use this space in the Newsletter to
say thanks to all those who worked with me during the pilot
project. Naturally we did not always agree, but if not we kept
bashing our heads together until the necessary decisions could
be reached in consensus. Most of the time, however, we worked
together as a harmonious team. I enjoyed those 22 months of
hard work very much, and I think we achieved a lot for ECTNA and
(hopefully) for chemistry education in Europe!

Bonjour,
http://www.univ-lille1.fr/ugsf/PSA.htm.
Pourriez-vous la divulguer auprès de vos collègues?
Je tiens également à vous annoncer le déroulement d'un cours d'une
journée juste avant le congrès, qui ciblera également les méthodes
de détection des modifications post-traductionnelles.
Merci d'avance,
Dr. Christian Rolando

6th International Congress of "Chemistry and Sustainable Development",
Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife ES, December 5-7, 2006
From: Secretaría Científica 6º
Congreso Química ANQUE <anque06@quim.ucm.es>
Answer to: karthincl@gmail.com
The Chemistry and the Chemical Engineering contribute
to the sustainable development because they supply clean
technologies and new products and, at the same time, they have the
sources to monitor and to interpretate the influence of
technological activities on the future of the Earth. With the aim to
contribute to this subject, the congress has been organized in the
following seven main areas, covering 17 topics:
Chemistry in
the resources management.
Chemistry in
the development of sustainable processes and products.
Materials and
sustainable development.
Wastes and
emissions.
Chemistry in
the improvement of the quality of life.
Chemistry in
the education and social communication for sustainable
development.
A new editorial programme will be
draft next September 2006 at the Management Comittee meeting.
