Foreword
Dear All,
I must first apologize for any inconvenience in
sending last month's News twice and soon after a short notice about some
technical problems regarding address links. I hope that everything is now
fixed and is working correctly ...
Anyway, here is the June issue, Summer time is
almost here, and usually holiday time for some of us, and exams and marking
sessions for some others ... it is maybe why the content of this issue is much
shorter than the previous one ;-)
Considering this point, let say "a general
Summertime lower activity period" and the fact that I will be away in
July and early August, the July-August issue will be published later, on
August 25. Please check item 2 below for more details.
Also, in item 3, I would like to draw your
attention to the former Computer team, the so called
"Computer-Experts" or "IT-Experts" and send them all a
Huge Thanks for their own contribution in entering the original datas as well
as the translations in the libraries of question we are all using now - it was
an important and necessary activity for the Test creation, but also a very
tedious task.
Well, it is now time for me to leave you enough
... time to read this NewsLetter !
and "See you" in August for the next issue of the News
Enjoy your holiday time, and take care of
yourselves.
Best regards
P.Mimero

ECTN Information
We have talked about the project 'Tuning
educational Structures in Europe' in which chemistry has a role as a
'synergy' area. A working group has now been established for this project, as
well as a parallel project submitted by Raffaella Pagani, Complutense
University of Madrid, under the Complutense's Socrates Institutional
Contract. The group consists of those people who signed up for Raffaella's
project, and members of Terry Mitchell's working group (Teaching Methods and
Assessment) of Paolo Todesco's group (Core Chemistry for the Future) - in
order to have one representative from each of the EUR-15 countries. The group
will be led by Raffaella Pagani
(Complutense Madrid, ES).
The group members are:
AT - Austria
Prof.Dr. Johannes Froehlich - TU Wien
BE - Belgium
Prof. Bernard Leyh - Université de Liège
DE - Germany
Prof.Terence N.Mitchell - Universität Dortmund
DK - Denmark
Prof. Matthew S. Johnson - University of Copenhagen
ES - Spain
Dr. Raffaella Pagani - Universidad Complutense
FI - Finland
Dr Kristiina Wähälä - University of Helsinki
FR - France
Prof. Anthony Smith - Ecole Superieure de Chimie Physique
Electronique de Lyon
Prof. Jean-Pierre Gorrichon - INP de Toulouse
GR - Greece
Dr. Evangelia Varella - Aristotle University of
Thessaloniki
IE - Ireland
Prof. Brian Jennings -University College, Cork
IT - Italy
Prof. Paolo Todesco - Universita di Bologna
Prof. Gino Paolucci - Università Ca' Foscari di Venezia,
NL - Netherlands
Prof.dr. Ad. Oskam - University of Amsterdam
NO - Norway
Professor George W. Francis - University of Bergen
PT - Portugal
Prof. Carlos Pascoal Neto - University of Aveiro
SE - Sweden
Prof. Bengt Jergil - Lund University
UK - United Kingdom
Dr. Richard J. Whewell - University of Strathclyde
This group has its first meeting on 22 June
2001 in Brussels. This meeting is being funded directly by the European
Commission.
Part of the project will involve distributing
questionnaires to recent graduates and to the chemical industry. It is likely
that ECTN members will be asked to help in this task. More information will be
provided in the next newsletter.

JULY-AUGUST ISSUE : Due
to the fact that I will be away for a month and a half in Australia, and also
due to the Summertime general lower activity, the July-August NewsLetter will

ECT Chemistry Tests
European Chemistry Test 2000 / CD current version : 3.5.1 eu
—_—_—_ Special
acknowledgement _—_—_—
I'm taking this opportunity to focus on the
former computer team, partners, all of them are Chemists and were involved in
the computer preparation of the Chemistry Test, almost all of them from the
real begining of the "Objective 1" project (Nov 97), during the
European Commission contract. I really appreciated working with all of them,
and I would like to send a HUGE THANKS to them.
Ladies first ...;-)
Dr. Janna VELDER
She is an Organic Chemist and a working partner in Hagga SCHMALZ's laboratory
team formerly at TU Berlin (DE) and now at the University of Köln (DE) - she
achieved a huge work between Novembre 97 and March 2000 with the Organic
Chemistry Libraries as well as the polishing step of a tremendous
number of questions on the other libraries, and on a couple of translated
LIbraries as well in the second stage of the project. She also was often
on-line since March 2000, providing the Russian version of the Organic Demo
and the Webpages.
I'm glad to announce that she now will be involved in the Perception
development and transfer of the question libraries.
Dr. Cecilia COLETTI
She was a Ph.D. student in Physical Chemistry, working at the University of
Perugia (IT) with Prof. Vincenzo AQUILANTI ; once graduated she moved for a
postdoc at the University of Copenhagen (DK) and for evident professional
reason, we needed to stop our collaboration in the project after 1 year of
fruitfull cooperation (Nov 97 - May 98). She was involved at the early stage
of the Physical Chemistry Test libraries and demo development.
Men after !
Dr. Dave COCKER
As an Analytical Chemist working at the university of Cork (IE), he was
involved between October 99 and March 2000, in the creation of the Demo in Analytical
and Inorganic Chemistry Tests.
Dr. Jorma KOSKIMIES
He is working at the University of Helsinki (FI), in the Kristiina WÄHÄLÄ /
Tapio HASE's Department of Chemistry. He was involved at the early stage of
the General Chemistry Level 1 and 2 libraries and demo
development. For professional reasons, he needed to stop his collaboration in
March 99 with the "Objective 1" project.
Dr. Jari KAPERI
Succeeding at the University of Helsinki (FI) to Dr. Jorma KOSKIMIES, was
involved until Décembre 99, in the second stage of the General
Chemistry (1 & 2) Tests development and pre-testing activities.
And of course ALL of the members of the former
"Objective 1" group, not listed here, who had also to work hard with
the software, and for some of them who had to work after the IT Experts ended
their own contribution.
Thanks again for the time spent, the work done,
the kindness and the patience with the Question Mark Windows version software,
who reminds us often that the computer highways are sometimes mysterious and
unpredictable ... ;-))

Agreement was made by the Working Group Leaders
on the suggested organization for the coming months.
- Everything related to the test
correction, mispelling, translation, updates ... will be taken in charge
by the representative group leader.
Translators will be asked for participation directly by the Group leader,
and will report to them.
Once the work done, polished, etc. ... the final test will be send to Lyon,
for the integration on the new CDRom release
- Everything related to the general
purpose (main file, discover, webpages, information) and the corresponding
translation will be taken in charge by Pascal Mimero.
Translators will be asked for participation directly by myself, and will
report to me.
- ECT Demo Tests
Thanks to the whole Bulgarian team, who
now completed the translation of the Demo test.
- ECT Volunteers
Still needed, especially in the
Analytical Chemistry Development ...

Dissemination Programme
A request is now made to everybody who had a
chance to talk, present or run a demo - concerning especially the Chemistry
Test, but also the ECTN activities if available - in a National or
International event, such as conference, meeting, symposium, .... to please
send us the appropriate information in order to complete the list :
- date,
- title of the meeting,
- city / country
if a resume was already submitted for the
NewsLetter, I will create a dynamic link to the proper page ; if no abstract
was submitted, it could be nice to have just a brief, short, description of
your production or on the context / objective of the meeting.
This request also includes those of you who
submitted a news item about ECTN to your national chemical society. A
reference to the publication of this item would be useful for all ECTN
members.
Would you like to do it right now ? click >
here<
!
Thanks
