Foreword

Dear All,

Welcome to this brand New Millenium and let me say for once in French "Meilleurs Voeux"  ;-)
Continuing with French ... want to virtually visit Lyon ? Start the year visiting the official website of Lyon presenting a couple of on-line postcards.

Anyway, I hope that all of you had a pleasant and peacefull Christmas time, and that you could enjoy this restfull period of the year before a crazy New Years eve.

From a more serious point of view, you might think that since the last century's Bulletin nothing much happened ?
except maybe ... see it below !

And now let me leave you enough time to read this News Letter.

Best regards
P.Mimero

Summary

1. ECTN website ... NEW !

Since December 26, we have our own Internet Domain Name, the new ECTN website will be accessible at : http://www.ectn.net

At the moment, the URL is automatically rerouted to the standard http://www.cpe.fr/ectn/, but as soon as the technical point will be OK with the CPE Tech Staff, "ectn.net" will be hosted directly at CPE. The ECT website (see below) will also be part of the ECTN. More details will come later.

2. ECTN News Letter

You received the monthly ECTN NewsLetter since 9 months already. Please remember that this information Letter is also your information letter, so you are all welcome to provide some material for ECTN wide diffusion. 2001 will have 11 numbers, 1 single number for July-August.

You probably took note, that the original ECTN mailing list was updated with the ECTN2 new members as soon as the ECTN2 contract was accepted by Brussels.

Also, if you change your email address, please let us know, asap to update our database and mailing list. If for some reason you do not want to receive this Bulletin anymore and want to be removed from the mailing list, please send back to me (click here to create automatically a blank email containing only the subject line filled with the following text : ECTN NewsLetter REMOVE...).

The monthly NewsLetter is sent by email as an HTML attachement and could eventually be provided as an Acrobat (.pdf) file format under request.

Privacy Policy : the address list contains the data provided either on the CDRom or on the EU membership contract. The mailing list contains only your fisrt name, name and email address. All the names and emails are used for internal ECTN purposes ; group leaders names could be used for an eventual new contact related to their own field of competence in chemistry within the ECTN scope. None of the names will be used for external diffusion nor for commercial purposes without your express authorization.

3. ECTN2 Plenary Meeting, LUND, SE, 26th-29th April 2001

You should now have received information about the plenary meeting in Lund. The information sent out by e-mail to each
Institution representative includes a provisional programme, financial details, information about the ECTN Association, and a hotel
booking form.

Please return the hotel booking form to Anna von Barth (Anna.von_barth@kanslimn.lu.se)
as soon as possible, and before 7th February.

Please distribute this information and the forms to others in your institution and in your working groups (in general only one person per institution receives information, as agreed at the start of the ECTN2 programme.

We look forward to seeing all of you in Lund, it will be a very important meeting for the future of the ECTN.

Summary

4. ECTN Translators mailing list

Why this organization ?

As a matter of fact the demo starts to be quite large and translations need to be made for the whole product before any new updates ; also, the ECT Website and the Tests online would also require updates and translations. This organization was suggested and is supported by the ECTN Management Committee.

Who will be elected ?

I will soon contact individually by email those who already participated in a translation process / one per language.

Are you forced to accept ?

You are free to accept or to not accept your assigned role. Whatever your answer is, please confirm it by return email. If you can't say OK, you can either keep your name on the list and arrange the work with your colleagues, or you can take your name out and suggest (eventually) somebody else.

What does it mean ??

When translations are required, general text, explanatory text, questions and tests, etc ... for new updates either for the CDRom or for the Internet version, you will receive the original English material to be translated into your own language :
    - as a word text file for those not having the appropriate software Question Mark Author for Windows.
    - as a test or library under Question Mark format for those having the QM Software.

Your role will be either to provide yourself the corresponding translation OR to ask somebody else from your department to do it for you. Once done, you are asked to send back the translated file as an attachment directly to Pascal Mimero. In order to be efficient, I will only take into account the file forwarded by yourself to avoid any conflict in having different versions of the same file. In fact you will act as a coordinator.

Summary
How much to do ??

The next release of the CDRom will require a lot of work from my side, and I will need your cooperation to release it. The new website will also need updates and translations.

  • For general purposes (explanation, description, ...) : just a native speaker is required.
  • For test translation or double checking the existing translation of test (english original vs. transl. version) : a native speaker and compatible domain of chemistry is required
Main rules of translation

As soon as you engage yourself (or somebody else) in the translation process of the test (either Demo or Full database), you should apply the following rules : this is MANDATORY, and this was accepted as the basis of an international test decided at the origin of the Network.

  1. The original English version needs to be faithfully translated into the new language
  2. Original meanings should be kept in mind : no adaptation to your own country
  3. Content is not supposed to be changed or adapted to fit any national programme nor department of chemistry requirement.
  4. Suggestion for correction, transformation or update : please refer directly to the ECT/ECC Group Leaders
  5. All translated files should be proofread by another Chemist
Group leaders : European Chemistry Test - Evaluation of Core Chemistry P.Mimero on behalf of the ECTN Management Committee
Summary

5. CD-Rom version
European Chemistry Test 2000 / current version : 3.5.1 eu

Thanks to ...

Tapio Hase for his comments and for his FInnish translation of the first part of the Main update (I will come back later on, on this point) as well as the Inorganic Chemistry Level 3 test.
Laszlo Somsak could organize the proofreading session for the Hungarian demo and provide some updates.

Summary

6. Internet version NEW !

The draft ECT website is finally released and will temporarily be available at : http://www.cpe.fr/ceetok/ect/
It still will need a lot of correction regarding the content, the translation and also some "text" updates, but at least it exists !

I decided to change the global approach, and to incorporate the "ECT Webpages" already translated in several languages (see CEETOK website) as a general information page about the tests, plus some of the content available on the Demo CDRom and of course using the HTML facilities to cross link the other pages and the access to the tests.

ECT "Webpages" are provided in : cz, de, el, en, es, fr, hu, it, nl, no, pl, pt, ro, se
ECT "Information and programmes" are provided in : de, en, fr, it
ECT "Tests" are provided in : en (Discover Europe, General Chemistry Level 1 & 2, Inorganic Chemistry Level 3, Physical Chemistry Level 3) - LAST MINUTE : tests still not "visible" on the Net at the moment of edition // asap ...
This site needs to be improved, and I would very much appreciate your comments and suggestions, as well as your technical info regarding compatibilities with navigators (Netscape and Explorer, and ??), multiplateform environments (Windows, Mac and Unix?), how it is displayed, how it is looking, if the fonts are correctly shown especially the Central Eastern one, etc ...

TECH NOTE : at this stage to run the tests under Perception, at least Explorer 4.x is needed ; normally Netscape 4.x or later should be able to run the tests as well. This will be restricted to Explorer 4 or 5 as soon as we deliver Certification tests under the Security Manager Module with ID control. More tests should be carried out with Netscape 6.x for similar compatibilities. We will see later.

8. European "Umbrella" Association

For their own contribution, thanks to :

Laszlo Somsak  providing the Hungarian,
Bengt Jergil providing the Swedish,
Henryk Koroniak providing the Polish,
Peter Ten Holte providing the Dutch,
translation of the ECT webpage. 14 languages are now available on-line.
The URL is still accessible at : http://www.cpe.fr/ceetok/  as Domain Name registration is somehow more tricky than we thought.

LAST MINUTE : the new domain name is "eask" (stands for European Association for Skills and Knowledge) and will be soon accessible at http://www.eask.be, for now automatically rerouted to the actual CEETOK website.
