N.8 - November2000SummaryForeword ForewordHello ! is there anybody online ... !Dear All, Anyway, important things are coming ...Please take 5, and read this paper carefully !! Thanks
P.Mimero
1. ECTN 2 : the come back ! Good news : ECTN 2 has been accepted 2. ECTN : Academic time ... Tony Smith has sent an 'Academic Staff Time' form to be completed by all ECTN participants to show how much time they spent on ECTN business during the period from 1st November 1999 to 31st October 2000. If you haven't received one please contact Tony Smith immediately. Please would all participants complete and return this form as soon as possible. It is very important to justify the universities contribution to ECTN costs. Also, if anyone has any information about ECTN dissemination activities (during the period Nov 1st 1999 to October 31st 2000) suitable to add to the ECTN Final report (deadline mid-December) please send this to Tony Smith IMMEDIATELY. Many thanks for any help you can provide for this final report.

3. CD-Rom and Internet version : Next version endangered !! European Chemistry Test 2000 / current version : 3.5.1 eu New version 4.0 : I'm sorry but I do not think that a new version of the CDRom will be issued by the end of the year. The participation for the first update file was so poor, sorry : almost inexistent !! I got only one file back !! Thanks Paolo T., but I won't use your contribution at the moment, maybe in the near future ... I hope ! Update (#1) : already received :
Italian, English (original file) and French provided by myself. IMPORTANT NOTICE : I would much
appreciate to have your agreement. Would you - YES or NO -
contribute to a new version of the CDRom and on the Internet ? Whatever your
answer is, please send an email in order to have a clear view about what will be
even possible to do. If the signal is not clear enough, I wonder about the
dissemination process ! should we continue trying to convince people in Europe
and overseas that we have a good test available ? What do you think about ? ...
we are waiting your answer. ECT Website : The
English pre-release of the future website dedicated to the Tests has been
installed at CPE Lyon. The web address will be made accessible for the next
NewsLetter (Dec. 2000). But, also, I wonder ... again, about the
translation required for the Internet version ??? I think that at this average
rate of production of the translated files it will last long ~ approximately 15
years ... the Internet technology will probably have changed by then :-(( 4. Chemistry Test Libraries Antonio L and his Italian
colleagues will start the review and the translation of the Physical Chemistry
Libraries. Other volunteers to translate the chemistry test
libraries into their own language are welcome to contact Pascal Mimero who can
supply the necessary files. 5. European "Umbrella" Association Chemistry presentation webpages on the CEETOK website (http://www.cpe.fr/ceetok/). The correction of the Italian version was done (thanks to Gustavo A. and Paolo T.). Thanks to Pavel D. for his Czech translation - added early November to the website. WATCH THIS SPACE NEXT MONTH (perhaps) for more
information on the Umbrella Association - including a new name. 6. Dissemination Programme 2000 - Reports EUCO-CC3 - Budapest (Hungary) ; September 3-8,
2000 P. Mimero presented a poster on the Evaluation of the Core Chemistry and a live demo. The congress was oriented towards Computational Chemistry and modelization, but education aspects were not well represented. Meanwhile, I had a couple of very interesting contacts from various countries (Europe, Russia, USA, Taiwan). The Russians really appreciated the Russian version of the Organic test and are ready to look further and forsee a participation or collaboration to provide more translations. I am also in touch with some other contacts that confirm their own interest in our product.

FIZ Chemie - Berlin (Germany) ; November 16, 2000Fachinformationszentrum Chemie /Vernetztes Studium-Chemie P. Mimero was invited in Berlin by the FIZ Chemie consortium, to present the ECTN and the Evaluation of the Core Chemistry project. It appears that the German network is really complementary to our network. They have the same Core approach as ourselves (see the ChemInt 2000 meeting report). They also have a very important task force, supported by the German Ministery of Education. We could maybe forsee for further collaboration.

INNO 2000 - Helsinki (Finland) ; September
2000 K. Wähälä presented a number of contributions (conferences and posters) on several topics of the ECTN projects. Please check the website at : http://www.helsinki.fi/inno2000/.

7. Image of Chemistry : "ChemInsight" Hendrik Z. sent me some information after the October meeting of the ECTN Image of Chemistry working group : a brand new website has been setup dealing with the objectives of the Image of Chemistry group. The website is currently under work, but already includes some information and links in English, German and Portuguese. French will come soon. Please visit the ChemInsight website at : http://www.cup.uni-muenchen.de/ChemInsight/ I recently discovered another website on "Green - Environmental Chemistry" called "GEIN - German Environmental Information Network" at : http://www.gein.de
