Dear All,
The 3rd edition of the Bulletin will now reach a
wider audience as we open it to all the ECTN members. This Bulletin aims to give
you up-to-date information regarding the project formerly entitled "Core
Chemistry Evaluation - Objective 1". It will contain different items such
as : Demo CD-Rom ; Demo on the Internet ; Database Libraries ; Testing files ;
Miscelleaneous ; Association ; ...
This monthly Bulletin will be issued around the
15 of each month, and could also contain some information you would like to
diffuse to the whole ECTN network. So feel free to let me know in advance. Any
suggestion to improve it ? feel free ... comments and suggestions are always
welcomed.

Demo CD-Rom
European Chemistry Test 2000 / version 3.5 eu
contains 15 languages plus a Russian version of
the organic test and a light Main file. The hard disk installation procedure
lets you select whatever pathway and hard disk you want. All the specific fonts
required for Greek, Central European and Russian are available on the CD. A new
and detailed help file was setup in english (pdf document).
The light version of the Help file accessible from the Main menu was updated
with screenshots of the translated QM messages (when available).
Technical update of ECT 2000 / version 3.5.1 eu
the CD that Tony will send you soon includes a
couple of corrections : 2 mistakes in the Uni2 tests / all languages and 2
mispellings in the Main file / English version. If you need to latest corrected
version of Uni2, please ask me.
Version 3.5.1 eu also includes the questionnaires
for the candidates on the CD-ROM which the candidates should complete during the
pre-testing phase of the tests. Please use the CD to carry out pre-testing and
send the results to the leader of the particular test you have used.
Next version v 3.6 eu
not yet scheduled, but not before next September
2000 may include :
- a couple of missing translated tests of the actual 3.5 version
New Inorganic : danish, finnish, swedish
Analytical : finnish, swedish
- any correction you might find in the various tests and translations
- suggestions to improve the actual version
Three of our new members had some interest in
translating the CD - full or partial test translation. Under consideration after
the Krakow meeting :
- Lithuanian / probably the full product : thanks to Mudis Salkauskas (U. of
Vilnius)
- Latvian / probably a couple of tests : thanks to Anda Priksane (U. of Latvia)
- Gaelic / if any, probably Uni1 & 2 : thanks to xxx
In each case the translation of tests will be
accepted and added to the future CDRom version and to the Internet, if at least
the Main file is translated, in addition the Help and Discover files should be
considered.
Also, keep in mind that we are actually running
16 languages, and each modification and new language added imply a couple of
translations in the other languages to update the various information. It just
take a little bit time ... thanks ;-))
Demo Internet
The new Internet version will be setup on the
ECTN website : you will be warned and informed about the schedule as soon as the
first version will be online.
First step : the English version of the
version 3.5.1. will first be transferred to the new Perception format / the
QMark Internet ready software to check the technical points.
Second step : followed by the standard
languages, using the standard Windows keyboard and set of characters :
- danish, dutch, finnish, french, german, italian, norwegian, portuguese,
spanish, swedish,
Third step : the other languages using
specific set of characters such as : czech, greek, polish, romanian
In the same group of languages, lithuanian and latvian / when they will be
available.
Will come soon
Quiet soon a document will be circulated to all
of you via Internet. You'll have to display it and give me feedback if
everything (special char) is readable without changing any options or setup of
your navigator. I guess that our network is large enough to cover most of the
"standard" computer configuration.
Testing "Test" ... continuing
The request of the Group leaders of
"Objective 1" is to run an extended testing period of the demo
(CDRom). A questionnaire translated in 5 languages (EN, DE, FR, IT, PT) will be
included with the CDRom you will receive by mail. For those not having it,
please ask an electronic form directly to Tony Smith (smith@cpe.fr).
Feedbacks, comments, answer files should be send
directly to the following people :
for general comments, not focusing on the tests
themselves :
to Anthony Smith (smith@cpe.fr)
for technical problems independant of the test
contents :
to Pascal Mimero (.pascal.mimero@wanadoo.fr)
Database Libraries
Available today
- Uni 1 & 2 : uk, pt
- Organic : uk, de, fr
- Physical : uk
- Analytical and Inorganic : uk (partial / under dev.)
Reminder for translators
If you want to translate questions for the
European Test, you should first contact the group leader and then apply the main
rules of the Working group defined 3 years ago as :
- question should be translated faithfully regarding the english original
question
- no adaptation (i.e. change of the content of one question) to fit one national
programme
- no changes in the structure of the libraries which fit the Core Chemistry
Group definitions.
It means that any suggestions or comments should
first be sent to the corresponding group leader who will decide with his own
working group.
Italian translation
Unless changes are under consideration in a close
future, the Italian version will no longer remain on the list of Library
translations, as the main rules were not respected.
Also the structure of the libraries changes
drastically from 30 libraries to 6, so we can't use it anymore in the main
scheme of the certification database.
