Aim of the group / Rationale:
The 'Links with schools'-group will survey what is currently done in
each of the partner countries, analyze the impact of these activities,
and hence create a collection of examples of good practice. The group
will also collect materials used in links with schools and make these
available (subject to any copyright restrictions) on the ECTN Image of
Chemistry website. The survey will consider questions such as: Are the
links initiated by schools or universities? Do university staff visit
local schools, and if so at what level and for what activities? Is the
chemical industry involved in visits to schools and do they provide
materials? Can these materials be made readily available? Do
universities target school teachers rather than students? At what level
should the target be - primary or secondary? Can we evaluate the impact
of these activities? Are there examples of anti-chemistry material that
we can identify and counteract by providing competing material? A
second-year activity of this group would be to provide assistance for
the translation of materials (we would emphasize that the primary role
of the ECTN is not to translate materials, but it does have a role in
providing assistance in translating, for example in providing suitable
contacts).
